4 Tips for Low Stakes Texas Hold’em

Despite the popularity of other poker variants pot limit Omaha, Texas Hold’em remains the number one poker game online. It doesn’t take long to learn the rules but becoming a master can take years. If you are finding it difficult to hold your own or new to poker, have no fear, we have four helpful tips you can use in games under $50 to improve your chances in the future.

1) Play Six Handed Tables

The best cash games can be found in the 6-max tables. You find wilder players and looser action so it’s definitely the better form to try. The games which have 8 or more players tend to be quite nitty. Few people are seeing the flop and the recreational players who just want to have fun don’t have the patience to play full ring poker. So, the first thing you need to do is learn some six max poker strategy. There are plenty of great strategy sites that offer tips on how to play six max. Play tight out of position and aggressive in later position and you will be on your way.

2) Slow down on the bluffs

Most players in the low stake’s games have a tendency to call you down. Take it easy on the big bluffs and your win rate will improve. Instead, target those who have shown tendency to fold to pressure. They are the players you can run smaller and less risky bluffs on. The standard player in the micro stake’s games is playing their own cards and will just call you down if they hit a hand like top pair so don’t expect them to fold much.

3) Set a stop loss limit

A stop loss limit is an imposed rule you enforce that means you quit the session if you lose a specific number of buy-ins. This protects your bankroll as it ensures you won’t blow up and go on  to tilt off more buy-ins. A good number is between three and five.

A stop loss limit is something all the best poker players are doing. It’s just common sense and good bankroll management. Whether we like to admit it or not, we are humans and prone to emotional reactions to losing money so deciding to quit when you lose a few buy-ins will help you maintain composed.

4) No slow playing

There’s no need to set elaborate traps in the low buy in cash games. Most players will just pay you off if they hit so don’t get too fancy with monster hands. By playing it slow you are only losing the opportunity to win more. So, bet your strong hands heavy and hope they hit something to call you down. You want to maximise your winnings when you have a strong hand so there’s no value to checking down with a monster hand hoping to get a big payday on the river.
